2016 Educate Cafe workshops

The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery is providing a series of trainings at each of our facilities. See descriptions and dates for each workshop below.

  • There is no cost to attend.
  • Participants will receive 2 continuing education units.
  • This series has been approved by IAODAPCA, LSW/LCSW, LPC/LCPC AND LMFT.
  • Breakfast is provided.

SESSION #1

OPIOID EPIDEMIC: EXAMINING THE WAR ON DRUGS

Opiate Addiction

This training will help participants gain insights into the growing impact of heroin use in the US and understand government and local efforts to build effective treatment solutions. We will cover the history of heroin, emerging trends with opiates, treatment needs and barriers, and responding to the heroin epidemic through treatment solutions and intervention.

SESSION #2

COMBATING AGEISM: MULTICULTURAL COUNSELING FOR OLDER PERSONS

Combating Ageism

This training will help participants gain a better understanding of the fundamental principles embodied in Becoming a Culturally Competent Counselor with respect to older persons. We will discuss ways clinicians can gain a better awareness of their own culture including values, biases and prejudices. As well as, the importance of gaining understanding of their client’s culture and developing culturally relevant interventions to improve treatment outcomes.

SESSION #3

THE KEYS TO STAYING IN ETHICAL SHAPE

The Keys to Staying in Ethical Shape

This training explores appropriate ethical practices within the therapy dynamic. We will discuss Ethical Standards 101, including beneficence, non-maleficence, respect for autonomy, competence, preserving confidentiality, and informing clients of important information. We will address the therapist’s role regarding ethical sensitivity and awareness during sessions. Maintaining ethics through ethical networks/accountability, professional code of ethics and professional literature, will also be discussed.

SESSION #4

FAMILY: FRIEND OR FOE IN THE THERAPY SETTING?

Family

This training will help participants recognize the value of family involvement in the treatment process. We will discuss the importance of understanding the family system, and the cost and benefits of family integration in therapeutic services. Establishing healthy boundaries and overcoming family dysfunction, will also be discussed.
