This workshop will:

  • Describe the underlying philosophy and principles of the Family Meeting Approach to Intervention and how to utilize this approach to assist families in addressing issues related to Addiction and other problems impacting upon the family system
  • Review the Johnson, Systemic and the ARISE Models of Family Interventions
  • Increase familiarity for coaching "Concerned Other" through the process of developing a support system in order to facilitate the Intervention
  • Provide practical information in order to implement Intervention techniques within a clinician's practice
  • Educate participants on becoming certified as an Interventionist
  • Address how to determine what Intervention approach or Model to use
  • Learn how to assess for "Safety Issues"
  • Provide Intervention techniques to address Process Addictions, such as gambling, food, sex, Internet, compulsive shopping/spending

Didactic lecture, video case vignettes, role-plays, and interactive group discussion will be utilized to facilitate the learning process.

About the speakers:

Mr. Randee McGraw is currently the Administrative Director of the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery at Proctor Hospital, where he has been employed since November 15, 1979. Mr. McGraw developed and implemented: the first comprehensive treatment program for Pathological Gambling in Illinois; a consultation service to implement treatment for Pathological Gambling in other agencies and hospitals; a treatment program for family members or concerned persons of people diagnosed with Addiction; a treatment program for Adult Children of Addicts and survivors of childhood trauma; a comprehensive treatment program for all process addictions; a gambling counselor training program. Mr. McGraw is the current President of the American Compulsive Gambling Counselor Certification Board and is the Past President, for three terms, of the Association of Intervention Specialists and a Board Registered Interventionist.

Phil Scherer is the Clinical Coordinator for the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery at Proctor Hospital. Mr. Scherer oversees the day-to-day clinical direction of the Illinois Institute's Proctor facility located in Peoria Illinois. Mr. Scherer is certified through the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association at the supervisor level. Mr. Scherer is a certified Problem and Compulsive Gambling Counselor as well as a Mental Illness and Substance Abuse II professional. Mr. Scherer is also certified through the American Compulsive Gambling Counselor Certification Board and the National Council on Problem Gambling as a counselor of problem gamblers. Mr. Scherer is a trained  Board-Registered Interventionist and a member of the Association of Intervention Specialists.

Problem and Compulsive Gambling:  Counselor Training 2008

This training will consist of a 30-hour course delivered throughout a five-day series.  It will provide participants with the requisite knowledge for the State of Illinois written certification exam for counselors of problem and compulsive gambling.  It also meets the coursework requirements for the national gambling certification.  At the end of this workshop, participants will have developed a strong clinical base for compulsive gambling issues as well as cultural competencies and client-centered treatment for compulsive gamblers and their families.  Training participants will be visiting the local casino as part of the training. 

About the speakers

Licensed and Certified staff from The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery (IIAR) will be providing the training.  The IIAR provides a full continuum of care for the treatment of chemical dependency, as well as gambling, food, Internet, sex, and compulsive spending addictions as well as chronic pain with addiction.

Current Ethical and Legal Issues in the Behavioral Health Field

This course explores current ethical and legal issues in the behavioral health field. The focus of this class is to enhance the professional development of health care professionals so as to adhere to the ethical codes, standards of conduct, legal statutes, and certification/licensing regulations of disciplines represented in the treatment process. It addresses how to minimize exposure to possible legal or ethical violations. Since no code of ethics can describe what to do in every situation, it is important to begin with the big picture, how to make ethical decisions.  The course distinguishes between what is legal, ethical and moral.

About the speaker:

Dr. David Powell has forty years of clinical experience and masters’ and doctoral academic degrees in counseling and psychology. He also has a master’s degrees in medical ethics from Yale University and has attended courses on ethics at Harvard University, studying at the medical, law, and divinity schools. He has trained throughout the world in clinical supervision, management and ethics and taught on ethics at Yale and Princeton Universities. He is the author of a self-study course published by DLCAS on ethics and clinical practice.

The Paradox of Extremes: Sexual Addiction and Sexual Anorexia

The Paradox of Extremes will explore common characteristics and risk factors of sex addicts as well as signs of sexual addiction.  The shame cycle of addiction extremes will ssist in identifying sexual deprivation/sexual anorexia criteria as core beliefs of both sex addicts and anorexics are discussed.  Assessment guidelines and assessment tools with appropriate treatment protocols will be offered.  Opportunities for experiential interventions will be offered.

About the speaker:

Ms. Tilford currently works for Life Healing Center in Santa Fe, NM where they specialize in trauma and sexual addiction.  She is also in private practice.  She is licensed by the State of Illinois as a Clinical Professional Counselor.  She is also certified to work with those clients suffering from sexual addiction and is a certified alcohol and other drug counselor.  She has trained nationally with Patrick Carnes on sexual addiction.

Eating Disorders: The Psychological, Biological and Expressive Arts Aspects of Treatment and Recovery

This course is an advanced course in treating clients who suffer from eating disorders.  Participants who attend this course will; 1.  Increase understanding of precedent and modern socio-cultural factors that contribute to development of eating disorders; 2. Educate on eating disorders and psychiatric co morbidity: prevalence and treatment modifications; 3. Discuss effective treatment strategies.

About the speakers:

Melissa Rocchi is the Director of Expressive Therapies and Art Therapist at Timberline Knolls, LLC. She received her undergraduate degree in Art and Psychology from Illinois State University and her master’s degree in Art Therapy from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. She started to combine her love for art and psychology while an undergraduate volunteering in county nursing homes and juvenile detention centers. Her training experience includes interning at both an inpatient adolescent psychiatric facility and the Chicago Department of Public Health, division of mental health. Her professional experience also includes hospice grief and bereavement work as well as adult and geriatric inpatient and addiction counseling. Melissa is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Illinois, has held several executive positions in the Illinois Art Therapy Association and is currently serving as a director on their board. Her professional memberships include The American Art Therapy Association; The American Foundation of Suicidology; and The Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association. She presents regularly on the uses and benefits of art therapy, both within and outside the art therapy community.

Loreta Stavskiene is an Eating Disorders Specialist at Timberline Knolls, LLC. She received her undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and her master’s in School Psychology from Klaipeda University, Lithuania. She also has her master’s in Clinical Psychology from Benedictine University, Lisle, IL.

Loreta has been working with individuals that struggle with eating disorders for about two years. She created curriculum for eating disorder program, runs psycho-educational groups such as Early Recovery, Relapse Prevention and Planning, and 12 Step based groups. Also, she provides meals support for residents and works in providing education on meal support for residents’ families and friends.  Loreta is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a member of the Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association.
