Outpatient Treatment Programs

Addiction Day Treatment

Addiction Day Treatment is an outpatient form of rehabilitation treatment offered to addicted individuals who need to establish a pattern of recovery in their lives. It is appropriate for persons who are physically and emotionally stable enough to receive treatment during the day and return to their homes during the evening. These are patients who need the benefit of a full day of structured therapeutic activities to establish a recovery pattern.

These individuals may start their recovery in the Inpatient Unit, or they may begin in a less intensive modality, such as an evening Outpatient Program. Unlike traditional Inpatient Treatment, Addiction Day Treatment involves less than a full day of peer support; however, the patient benefits from the daily support of family and friends.

The Addiction Day Treatment Program begins at 8 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Services are provided on the Adult Unit of the IIAR. Patients are assigned a counselor and attend group therapy, lectures and discussions along with Adult Unit Inpatients. Patients may stay as long as 5 p.m. each day; however, arrangements can be made to leave earlier if work schedules require. Aftercare is provided following all rehabilitation services.

Addiction Day Treatment is provided on a variable length of stay model. Every patient has his or her own individualized treatment plan. As the objectives of the plan are completed, a patient moves on to the next phase of treatment. The typical patient can expect to participate in the program for two to four weeks. Sometimes Addiction Day Treatment patients may benefit from a transfer to the Outpatient Treatment Program which meets for four hours each evening, Monday through Thursday before starting Aftercare.

Aftercare

Patients are expected to attend the regular weekly group Aftercare meetings following discharge from Addiction Day Treatment. Aftercare is provided following all rehabilitation services and is available days and evenings. Adult Aftercare generally lasts three to four months.

Young Adult Addiction Day Treatment

The Young Adult Addiction Day Treatment Program is a specific form of Outpatient Rehabilitation. It may be the first service for individuals seeking recovery, or a second service on their continuum of care.

Young Adult Addiction Day Treatment is appropriate for individuals ages 12-21 who are addicted to alcohol, drugs or gambling and in need of treatment to establish a pattern of recovery in their lives. The most appropriate young adult will be one who is physically and emotionally stable enough to receive services after school and return home in the evening.

The program begins at 1:45 p.m., Monday through Friday. Patients will also be assigned some days of Saturday treatment. Services are provided on the Young Adult Unit of the Institute. After the young adult is assigned a counselor, he or she attends group therapy sessions, lectures and recreation activities along with Young Adult Unit inpatients. The program follows a different schedule each day; however, patients are usually dismissed by 6 p.m. Saturday programming runs from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m.

The major difference between Young Adult Addiction Day Treatment and traditional Inpatient Treatment is the volume of peer interaction available to the young adult. When a person lives in the hospital, they receive the benefit of 24 hour care and the increased influence of a peer support group. Addiction Day Treatment patients have been assessed as stable enough to "stay clean" during the evening without this peer support.

Patient care is directed by an individualized treatment plan created by our treatment team. Team members include physicians, counselors, nurses, recreational therapists and clergy personnel. Psychiatric consultation is available when necessary. Young adults participating in this program are expected to attend Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and/or Gamblers Anonymous meetings during the week. Their families are also expected to participate in the family care services provided by the IIAR.

There is no preset length of stay in this program, because every patient has his or her own individualized treatment plan. The speed with which a person moves through Addiction Day Treatment really depends on his or her ability to accept the disease of addiction and begin practicing the principals of recovery. Treatment has two components, an intensive component (Addiction Day Treatment, or Phase I) and a follow-up component (Aftercare, or Phase II). As patients meet the objectives on their treatment plan, they move on to the next level of care.

The typical young adult can expect to participate in four to five months of Phase II. Failure to complete this phase is a failure to complete treatment. Individuals who fail to complete Phase II typically relapse within a year. Patients in the Young Adult Addiction Day Treatment Program are expected to attend regular weekly Phase II groups for three to four months; families are expected to attend Family Phase II as well.
