Extended Care Program

The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery’s Extended Care Program is located at Proctor Hospital in Peoria, Illinois, and BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Normal, Illinois. It is designed to accommodate those adult clients, age 18 or older, needing a setting which provides more time and structure to deal with problems associated with addictive behaviors such as chemicals, gambling, food, sex, spending, or Internet use. The extended length of stay can assist with entrenched denial, chronic relapse, and other complicated issues such as chronic pain or multiple diagnoses. The program staff is also skilled at working with professionals whose licensure may be in jeopardy.

Phase One takes place in a structured twenty-four hour environment where a client is assessed for problems and needs, extensively evaluated by the experienced, multidisciplinary treatment team, and participates in the treatment planning process. The treatment team of professionals consists of physicians who each have twenty-five years of experience in addiction medicine, registered nurses, licensed and certified clinicians, consulting psychiatrists and psychologists, a recreation therapist, a financial counselor, and others with extensive training in addiction.

Regular counselor contact, treatment team meetings four days a week, and weekly treatment plan reviews provide feedback to the client about progress toward goals. The client attends daily process education groups along with twice a day daily group therapy, relapse prevention, life skills, meditation, reflections group, and 12-step meetings. Process addictions such as gambling, food, sex, spending, and the Internet are treated through individualized programming and specialty groups. Additional sessions can be tailored to address issues surrounding, but not limited to, dual diagnosis, trauma, anger management, conflict resolution, mood stabilization, chronic pain, and financial problems. Employer conferences assist with the transition to and from treatment. Phase One can last up to four weeks.

Our philosophy is that family involvement is critical to begin to address the needs of the entire family system, not just the addicted person. While in Phase One the client and family will complete an intensive, four-day family program. The program can be presented in several formats to accommodate the needs of individual families.

Once complete, the client will transition to Phase Two where the client is placed in an outpatient program which meets four nights a week. Process education group and group therapy continue along with individual and family therapy sessions. If appropriate, clients will continue to attend unit-based groups or meetings as well. While in Phase Two, clients begin practicing the skills learned in Phase One to assist them in daily freedom from their addiction while being involved in a more conventional daily routine. Additionally, the clients will be involved in community-based activities, recreation development, and employment and/or volunteer opportunities. Daily 12-step meeting attendance is also a part of Phase Two. Phase Two can last up to eight weeks.

Phase Three is designed around the needs of the client. While remaining in the community, the client will attend individual and group sessions at a less intensive level if appropriate. Regular 12-Step meeting attendance and community involvement through work or volunteerism is required.

A confidential assessment interview is the first step for individuals seeking assistance. Although appointments are preferred, walk-ins are always accepted. Assessments are free of charge and last approximately 90 minutes.
